The rolê is a foundational rotational figure in Forró Universitário, characterized by the follower executing a circular path around the leader while maintaining a continuous, elastic connection [2]. Unlike the traditional, close-embrace Nordestino style which emphasizes a static side-to-side shuffle, the Universitário style incorporates more complex arm figures and rotational movements [2]. In a standard rolê, the leader guides the follower to rotate around their axis, often utilizing a single-hand hold to facilitate the circular trajectory. The leader remains relatively stationary or shifts slightly to accommodate the follower's path, while the follower uses a series of walking steps to complete the rotation. This figure relies on the rhythmic interplay of the accordion, zabumba, and triangle, which define the dance's pulse [1, 3, 4]. While the term 'rolê' in Brazilian Portuguese slang broadly refers to an outing or social gathering [5], in the context of the dance floor, it specifically denotes this rotational movement. As Forró has expanded from its Northeastern Brazilian roots into southern urban centers and international scenes, the rolê has become a staple for dancers seeking to integrate improvisation and spatial awareness into their practice [2, 4].

Lead and follow cues

CountTypically executed over a 4-beat or 8-beat phrase depending on the rhythm (xote or baião).

Lead

Initiate by creating a slight tension in the connection, guiding the follower to step around the leader's axis while maintaining a circular frame.

Follow

Maintain consistent connection with the leader's hand, stepping into the circular path while keeping the torso upright and responsive to the lead's tension.

Prerequisites

  • Basic side-to-side step
  • Basic connection maintenance
