Fly
Rueda de Casino rhythmic clap call
RuedaLevel: Beginner1 min read3 citations
Fly is a basic rhythmic call in Rueda de Casino, a Cuban circle form in which multiple couples respond to a caller while maintaining the shared rueda structure.[1] Unlike travelling figures that exchange partners or rotate the couple through space, Fly is centered on a hand clap added to the ongoing casino basic; one source identifies it specifically as a basic rueda move characterized chiefly by a clap.[2] In ordinary casino timing the couple continues the two-measure 1-2-3, 5-6-7 stepping frame, with one break per measure, while the clap is inserted without changing partners, slotting, or turn direction. The leader and follower therefore preserve mirrored footwork: each breaks away on the appropriate break count for the local timing and returns through the basic, using the clap as a rhythmic accent rather than as a lead for travel. The name circulates in rueda vocabulary as the English-derived call “Fly,” with related called variants such as Dos Fly, Fly línea, and Festival de Fly attested as expanded clap-and-body-movement sequences.[3]
How it's danced
Lead and follow cues
CountCasino/Rueda On1 frame: 1-2-3, pause/mark 4, 5-6-7, pause/mark 8. The base Fly keeps this frame and inserts a clap as the caller’s rhythmic accent; it is not an On2/mambo count map.
Lead
In casino On1 rueda timing, maintain the basic through 1-2-3 and 5-6-7, breaking once per measure. Keep the follower oriented in place, release only enough hand contact to allow the clap, mark the called Fly as a compact rhythmic clap, and reestablish the normal basic connection by the next 1.
Follow
In the same 1-2-3, 5-6-7 casino frame, preserve mirrored footwork and do not travel forward as if entering a turn or partner change. Break once per measure, answer the leader’s release by marking the clap in place, and return to the normal rueda basic connection by the next 1.
Song timingBest at ordinary social rueda tempos where the clap can be compact and the basic remains stable, roughly 150-185 bpm; around 190 bpm and above, Fly should stay small so the clap does not disturb timing or partner connection.

Prerequisites
- Casino basic step
- Rueda circle spacing
- Basic hand connection release and recovery
- Listening to the caller
Watch out
Common mistakes
- Treating Fly as a travelling turn or partner exchange instead of a stationary rhythmic clap call.
- Breaking twice within one measure rather than once per measure in the 1-2-3, 5-6-7 casino frame.
- Letting the clap pull the couple off the rueda circle spacing or delay the return to connection.
- Adding Dos Fly, Fly línea, or Festival de Fly actions when the caller has called only the base Fly.
Don't confuse with
Easily confused moves
- Dos Fly: a related variation with two claps, not the same as the base Fly.
- Fly línea: a related line-oriented clap variation, not the base in-place Fly.
- Festival de Fly: an expanded sequence with additional body action, not the plain call.
- Cross-body lead or dile que no: travelling reorientation figures, not rhythmic clap calls.
