Le main à main est une figure compacte de cha-cha dans laquelle le couple s’ouvre à répétition depuis une position face à face vers une orientation côte à côte, rocke en arrière, puis revient face à face avant d’alterner vers l’autre côté. Son cadre musical est le rythme de cha-cha de ballroom, composé de deux changements de poids plus lents suivis d’un chassé en trois pas, couramment compté 2, 3, 4-et-1.[1] Dans chaque demi-figure, les partenaires utilisent des pieds opposés et une action corporelle correspondante : un partenaire rocke en arrière tandis que l’autre rocke en arrière sur le pied miroir, de sorte que le couple s’ouvre en s’éloignant plutôt qu’un partenaire n’avance à travers un couloir. La réorientation est mise en scène plutôt que fouettée : environ un quart de tour vers l’extérieur sur le compte 2, un remplacement contrôlé sur 3, puis un quart de tour de retour vers la position face à face sur 4-et-1. La figure appartient au vocabulaire standardisé du cha-cha de ballroom qui s’est développé après l’entrée du cha-cha-cha cubain dans la pratique internationale des studios par la transmission et la codification du milieu du XXe siècle.[2] Dans les scènes latines sociales hors ballroom, la même idée physique peut apparaître sous la forme d’un motif d’ouverture en rupture ou de rupture latérale, mais l’appellation en majuscules Main à main est principalement une étiquette de syllabus de ballroom.

Attention
Erreurs courantes
- Treating the follower's count 2 as a forward travel instead of a mirrored back rock.
- Turning the opening as a single late swivel rather than staging about 1/4 away on 2 and about 1/4 back across 4-and-1.
- Breaking twice inside one measure instead of using one checked break on count 2.
- Letting the joined hand pull across the body, which distorts the side position and delays the chasse return.
- Over-rotating beyond the side position so the partners lose the facing return on 4-and-1.

- Open break: related checked action, but not the same alternating side-position syllabus figure.
- New Yorker: opens to a forward check in promenade-like shape, while Hand to Hand uses a back check away from the partner.
- Cross-body lead: a slotted salsa exchange of places, not a cha-cha side-position rock and chasse.
- Back spot turn: a solo turning action, not the mirrored partnered Hand to Hand.
