Danzón: Improver Class Plan
Timing, carriage, phrasing, and social-floor navigation
Danzón2 min read
Objective
By the end of class, students can dance a compact improver-level danzón phrase with clearer timing, upright frame, controlled pauses, and safe social-floor awareness.
Duration
75
Warm-up
Begin with 10 minutes of individual posture, breath, ankle-knee-hip mobility, and small weight transfers to moderate danzón music. Add clapping or stepping on the basic pulse so students settle into timing before taking partner hold.
Lesson blocks
- 10 min: Timing and weight transfer review. Students mark the basic step in place and then traveling slightly, keeping the feet close to the floor and completing each weight change before the next step.
- 12 min: Frame and connection calibration. Partners establish an upright, relaxed hold, test lead-follow information through the torso and center, and reduce arm pressure until direction changes remain clear without pulling.
- 14 min: Compact traveled basic with navigation. Couples move the basic pattern along a short lane, then repeat it with smaller steps for crowded-floor practice; leads choose direction early, and follows maintain their own axis.
- 12 min: Pause and suspension control. Students practice entering a musical pause, staying balanced through the standing leg, and restarting together without collapsing posture or rushing the next count.
- 14 min: Simple opening or turn and return. Teach one modest figure that opens the partnership and returns to closed position, first without music, then with music, keeping rotation small and the follow's shoulder and neck free.
- 8 min: Mixed-level integration. Newer improvers repeat the core phrase with cleaner timing, while stronger dancers add phrase awareness, partner switching, or dancing the opposite role without adding extra figures.
Cool-down & social
Finish with 15 minutes of slower social rounds, partner rotation by consent, brief feedback on step size and frame, and a final quiet walk-through to release tension.
Materials
- Clear dance floor with enough space for line-of-dance practice
- Moderate-tempo danzón tracks with audible pulse
- Speaker with reliable volume control
- Optional chairs or floor markers to define short practice lanes
Full write-up
This improver danzón class is designed for students who already recognize the basic timing and can move with a partner without constant counting. The objective is to make the dance cleaner, calmer, and more musical: students refine upright carriage, compact walking action, partner connection, pauses, and simple phrase-based transitions. The class begins with individual rhythm and posture work before asking partners to carry the same clarity through shared frame. This order is important because danzón depends on controlled weight changes and quiet coordination more than large figures or athletic display.
The main blocks move from isolated timing to partnered frame, then to a short combination that can be repeated socially. The teacher keeps the material narrow: a basic traveled pattern, a pause or suspension, a simple turn or opening, and a return to closed position. Improver students benefit from this limited vocabulary because it leaves enough class time for listening, adjusting step size, and rotating partners. Role-fluid rooms can invite dancers to try lead and follow tasks separately, while still making clear that each role has different timing responsibilities in navigation and response.
The social-practice ending gives students a chance to repeat the phrase with different partners at moderate tempos. Consent and safety are treated as non-negotiable: partners may decline rotation or a dance without explanation, and leaders must avoid pulling, twisting, or using the arms to force direction. The cool-down returns attention to posture, breath, and musical listening so the class ends with usable social habits rather than a memorized sequence only.
